The Prince and the Thief by P.S. Scott is an LGBTQ story about two individuals each standing on the opposite ends of the social spectrum. On one side, we have Aidan, a righteous prince who wants social equality for everyone in the kingdom, holding a secret that might cost him a price he’s not willing to pay. On the other, there’s Will, a cheeky money-loving street urchin with a penchant for shiny objects, trying (and failing, often) to hide his affinity for water magic. Their social standing couldn’t have been further from each other but an accidental meeting led to another that soon ended up in an unexpected partnership. Both of them hold secrets that could change their lives — one infinitely greater than the other — and when it all comes out in the open, they both need to decide where their loyalties lie.
The Prince and the Thief made me think about love. For one thing, Aidan falls in love quickly. At first blush, my cynical heart wanted to grab the boy and shake him back to his sensibilities. But P.S. Scott wrote him in such a way that Aidan himself deconstructed this very concept. Aidan made me think: who am I to judge someone for loving quickly? Wouldn’t the world be a better place if everyone simply loves? Aidan made me think: love is love, regardless of blood, regardless of status, regardless of how fast you fall in love. The Prince and the Thief is an entertaining read with an intriguing plot and realistic dialogues. I recommend this book to those who are looking for a plot-driven story with a more subdued romance. I’m certainly looking forward to the next installment of the series because with everything that’s happening, with Aidan’s righteous aspirations and blossoming feelings, with Will’s reckless sassiness and one-track-mind, it will certainly be an even more exciting ride.
