Born and raised in Southern California, I transplanted myself and family to Kaysville, Utah, twenty-five years ago. I have degrees in education from BYU and USC. Having recently retired from a career in Information Technology, I am finally able to focus on writing. I was inspired to write The Porch because two of my grandsons are on the autism spectrum. I imagine for them successful but challenging lives. The main character Edward is my projection of my grandsons' future.

The Porch is an inspirational novel written by David Alan Armstrong. Edward loved his job. He delighted in the orderly progression of numbers, each in their set space, and he relished his role in making the accounts payable section of Western Fabricators work perfectly. He was not at all prepared that morning when his boss, Mr. Cooper, asked him to come into his office. Mr. Cooper invited him to sit down and explained what he wanted. From that day forward, Edward had a very important assignment that had to occur on the first of every month. He was to hand-deliver a check to Frederick E. Johnson, and yes, it was a settlement, and no there was really no reason for Edward to know any more about it. He would be making the trip on company time, and there was no way he was going to get out of doing it. Edward was stressed by the abrupt change in what he found a pleasant and orderly routine. He had no idea how those monthly deliveries would enhance his world.
David Alan Armstrong’s The Porch gives readers an insight into the world of an autistic young man whose life is forever changed by the wording of a legal settlement that provided for the hand-delivery of a check on a monthly basis. I loved watching as the unworldly and somewhat rigid young man begins to grow as a result of his experiences visiting Mr. Johnson. The Porch is beautifully written, and Armstrong’s characters are well-detailed and authentic. Does Mr. Cooper realize that he is setting in motion Edward’s coming of age and true ascension into adulthood and a life filled with love and dreams? One can only speculate while reading this thoughtful and well-written novel. The Porch is highly recommended.
