The Polar Bear and the Dragon: Perilous Passage by Debbie Watson is the third book of a fantasy series for middle graders. After becoming vital members of the Alliance in Yagdi, Whitney (13) and her best friend Edward (14) prepare for a happy return home when somehow they find themselves stuck in the portal between Earth and Yagdi. Trapped with seemingly no escape, the two youngsters discover that their abilities don't work in the "Nowhere Land." They also meet a mysterious prankster who they don't know if they can trust. Meanwhile, Whitney's mother and Edward's grandparents are visited by the members of the Alliance, led by Traveller. Now Whitney and Edward must face off against an ancient wizard in peak powers alongside their friends and family. Can they prevail?
The Polar Bear and the Dragon: Perilous Passage is the perfect adventure book for preteens and young adults who savor fantasy stories about wizards, dragons, and shapeshifters. Filled with action, magic, and witty dialogue, Debbie Watson's action-adventure tale is an absolute joy to read. With likable characters and a captivating plot, Watson weaves a fantastical yarn that is thoroughly entertaining while showcasing the importance of universal values of friendship, family, and second chances through an immensely satisfying narrative. Whitney and Edward's camaraderie shines through the pages, and their relationship acts as a glue to the dynamic between the other characters. I also enjoyed the secondary characters like Susan, Mallory, Traveller, and Patrick. All in all, a gem of a book for young fantasy readers.
