The Pilgrim: Part 1 is the exciting fourth installment in a planned nine-book series, The Immortality Wars, by A. Keith Carreiro. Pall Warren, a battle-hardened warrior from medieval times, woke up in an unfamiliar place. He soon discovered that he had not only traveled into the distant future but also entered a different dimension. His original world was viewed as an experimental hyper-reality created by a people in search of the key to immortality. In the new dimension, mankind has ventured into outer space and has developed artificially intelligent sentient beings. However, Pall was special, as the powers that be believed he was the key to becoming like the gods. Pall considered himself to be a pilgrim sent on an important journey by God.
I enjoyed The Pilgrim by A. Keith Carreiro. The references to previous events made me want to go back and read the series from the beginning. This entry focused on defining reality, life, and death and was thought-provoking. The Christian message of hope for eternal life through the risen one was subliminally related. I found all the characters intriguing. Evangel, Pall’s love interest, does not feature regularly in the book, so information about her in the cast of characters section was greatly appreciated. The action scenes were thrilling, and Pall’s weapons were capable of inflicting serious damage. The pacing was a bit slower than I would have preferred, but I think avid fantasy sci-fi readers who are willing to read a lengthy series would enjoy it. I believe that this is a worthwhile read.
