The Perihelion: Complete Duology by D.M. Wozniak offers up both the original title story and its sequel - An Obliquity. Together, these two highly intelligent science fiction novels (now included in one book) comprise the uniquely creative, meticulously well developed, and masterfully plotted future vision of Bluecore 1C (old Chicago evolved) and its human and mostly-human inhabitants. The cast of Perihelion is the foundation on which this fascinating novel is built. Especially, the mostly-humans. Somewhat derogatorily, they are referred to as 99’ers – implying they are 99% human and 1% something else. And though they are actually less than 1% something else – leopard, wasp, cephalopod – it’s the tiny bit of beast that makes them so extraordinary. And treated most inhumanely. And creates their conspiracy for freedom. The Island of Dr. Moreau, as modernized for future Earth.
D.M. Wozniak excels at incorporating fresh ideas, complex plotting, and fascinating characters into The Perihelion. He creates a world so internally consistent and amazing that the reader participates as the highly awestruck observer just passing through, but one helplessly caught up in a precise moment of future history that will forever change the world. Someone is murdering the leopards. Sexual enticement explodes their hearts. A journalist researching the mysterious pattern of these otherwise unnoticed deaths, using a tiny, personalized drone called a hummingbird (labeling himself as such as well) becomes enmeshed in this traitorously deceptive crime, and soon finds himself at equal risk to the 99’ers, who after all want only equal treatment with the humans. A classic theme, treated expertly in this our future world.
