No good deed goes unpunished is the perfect way to describe the theme of The Panacea Project by Catherine Devore Johnson. People had always targeted (or avoided) Calla Hammond due to their biases against her skin condition. Yet, things turned dramatically when the doctors discovered that her body was curing cancer by itself. Now, people could not get enough of her. She agreed to share her gift by participating in medical research. Her noble cause, however, introduced her to the greed-and-desperation-induced evil side of humans. In a moment, she was turned from a living, breathing person to something everybody wanted to use for their own welfare or financial gain. Her quest to help find a cure for cancer turned into her worst nightmare, one from which she might never wake up.
The Panacea Project by Catherine Devore Johnson is a beautiful combination of engaging fiction and bitter reality. The plot revolves around a topic that hits close to home for many readers: a cure for cancer. In theory, such a possibility should bring hope for a better tomorrow and co-operation from everybody involved. But, Johnson has explored the insanely selfish side of humans who refuse to look at the bigger picture and instead focus on their personal agenda. It was heartbreaking to see Calla, a selfless and beautiful woman, suffer at the hands of evil. The storytelling is exceptionally engaging. Touching upon complicated emotions, The Panacea Project leaves an unforgettable mark on its readers. If nothing else, Johnson's heartfelt creation will force the audience to look at their souls and see whether they find Calla or greed inside.
