The Order of St. Michael: A Bud Hutchins Thriller is a contemporary paranormal fantasy for young adults written by J.B. Michaels. Bud Hutchins discovered that one of his teleportation devices had been stolen, and he was hot on the thief’s trail. His first stop was Salem, Mass, where he was greeted with the disturbing sight of a dead man wearing robes. Examining the body led Bud to determine that the man's blood was probably collected by the killer. His ruminations on the corpse were suddenly interrupted by the rustling of leaves. Wheeling round, Bud gave chase to a fleeing hooded figure who, when apprehended, turned out to be the murdered man's niece and protegee. Her name was Maeve, and her uncle was attempting to keep the witches of Salem dead and buried. His death resulted in the unholy appearance of a very hungry and definitely unwholesome coven of witches who are determined to make a meal of Bud and Maeve. Will Bud be able to convince the local police that he's not the killer, vanquish a coven of undead witches, and regain his tech, not to mention simply stay alive? Even the savviest, paranormal inventor-sleuth would find Bud's situation a challenging one indeed.
J.B. Michaels' contemporary paranormal fantasy for young adults, The Order of St. Michael: A Bud Hutchins Thriller, introduces a new sleuth who combines the deductive reasoning of a young Sherlock Holmes with the uncanny and instinctive gift for coping with the unnatural of Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden. I started to smile as I listened to Bud's discourse on the condition of the corpse he encounters and kept smiling throughout this exciting, original and very entertaining book, which cunningly blends science with the supernatural. Michaels' plot is fast-paced and filled with the unexpected, and his characters are finely drawn and credible. I'll be watching for more Bud Hutchins Thrillers -- surely an inventor/investigator this prodigious deserves a few more adventures. The Order of St. Michael: A Bud Hutchins Thriller is grand fun for contemporary fantasy lovers of all ages and it's most highly recommended.
