The Northeast Quarter by S.M. Harris is a historical event novel laced with drama and built around a powerful political and historical setting. The story starts in 1918 with little Ann Hardy, ten-year-old daughter to Colonel Carson who runs an agricultural empire. She is watching a man who seems to be watching their home, “a dark silhouette against the green of the cornstalks beyond.” The colonel is murdered the same day that he makes an unusual request of his young daughter to protect the Northeast Quarter when he is gone. Things change rapidly, with grandma getting married to a domineering, corrupt, and selfish banker, Royce Chamberlin. Over the years, Ann grows faster than normal, learns to think like her enemy, and develops a plan whose execution will irrevocably change everything in the Northeast Quarter in 1929.
How could one not be seduced by the lyricism of the language and the strong plot lines, by the mesmerizing conflict and the compelling characters? S.M. Harris has a knack for weaving historical elements into a gripping fiction story, keeping readers spellbound by the strength of the narrative. The narrative voice is clear and the shifts in POV are masterfully done so that the reader follows the story without getting confused at any point. The protagonist is fully developed, and readers will love to watch her grow, the kind of character one only meets in works of the likes of Jeffrey Archer. Watching Ann develop from a precocious young girl to a mature, resolute, and resourceful woman is interesting. Overall, this is the kind of book for readers who love character and conflict–driven stories that are entertaining. It’s a page-turner.
