The Night Luna’s Light Went Out by K. J. Field is a space-themed children’s picture book suitable for readers aged 4-8. It features the story of Earth and Luna, who have been best friends since the dawn of the solar system. The story takes off with a description of the warmth and depth of their friendship. One day, however, Luna begins to think about the magnificence of Earth and eventually starts to feel insecure about herself. Her misery causes her light to go out, and it flings both Luna and Earth into deep trouble. Earth reaches out and restores Luna to her rightful place. Regaining her position, she finds the ability to look at herself in a new light.
K. J. Field’s The Night Luna’s Light Went Out is a marvelous book that has multiple layers to it. The book wonderfully shows the roles that the moon plays in the well-being of Earth and what terrible consequences the latter would face if the former somehow disappeared. Through portraying the interdependence of Earth and the moon, Field sheds light on important issues including the importance of friendship and appreciation. Luna’s erroneous thoughts concerning her insignificance and the eventual realization of her worth contain a lesson for many of us. Whether we are undermining our own role or that of others, Luna’s journey shows us the massive impact that the absence of seemingly small things may leave on their larger counterparts. The symbolic significance of the story has truly left a deep impression on my mind.
