The Next Great Rock Star by Ann Herrick is a tale of life and how not to behave! Jason has got together with his friends and formed a band called No Frills. They want to keep things real, although when they enter a contest they come under a lot of pressure to change their image. Jason is happy with the way things are going – until he gets struck by lightning. All of a sudden, everything is different. Jason thinks he is a cool cat now and no one can tell him otherwise. The only thing that is keeping things real for him is the tiny rescue kitten he has hidden in his room. When the boys in the band start to drift away from him, he suddenly realizes that he needs to do something to bring back his friends. Is it too late? Has Jason gone too far or can he come back down to earth?
The Next Great Rock Star by Ann Herrick is a well-crafted tale, aimed at the preteen age group. It’s a great story, written in the right language for the age group, and it follows a natural path from beginning to end. Character development is good and well matched to the story being told. However, on top of all this there are some great life lessons here, lessons on how not to behave! It teaches preteens about changing attitudes, losing focus, and how not to destroy friendships and hurt people because of a selfish attitude. I think any preteen or young teen will benefit greatly from this tale and there may be a few adults that could learn a lesson or two as well. Good book, I enjoyed it.
