The Navigator by Erin Michelle Skye and Steven Brown is the second book in the Tales of the Wendy series. There's a price to changing destiny. No one else in the crew wants Wendy as the Navigator, but she's determined to prove her worth is more than being the only one that can work the magical compass. They spend their days chasing after French ships for capture which is how they make two shocking discoveries: they see a ship fly and they catch sight of the Everlost helping the French. Hook still doesn't trust her and even the crew doesn't seem to think she's competent enough to be on the ship. Peter Pan's whereabouts are still undetermined but she hopes that he's still finding a way to look out for her and that they'll see each other again soon, especially as Wendy navigates their way to Neverland. A new threat emerges on the horizon with Captain Blackheart at the helm and his growing army of Everlost. As if Blackheart wasn't threat enough, Hook has his own agenda and plans to dispose of Peter Pan once his mission is complete.
This reimagining of JM Barrie's Peter Pan is stunning, engaging, and captivating with a story that takes you to new heights. Precise details went into the elegant writing style which reflects the tone of the original story. The dialogue sends you directly into this world and referring to her as the Wendy makes you feel like you've entered Neverland. The story contains little homages throughout that are reminders of the original story such as Tootles always missing everything and the mermaids, which Erin Michelle Skye and Steven Brown deliver in an original voice. Skye and Brown weave a few twists to bring the classic Neverland to life while also remaining true to the original elements of lost boys, pirates, and mermaids. The winged Everlost, imps, dragons, and sirens are woven into the story in new touches that give life to a classic story.
Fighting at sea is still an intricate part of the story with Hook's crew chasing French ships, battles at sea, and the dreaded Captain Blackheart creating a new threat for them to face. Neverland is still an important element in the setting. Skye and Brown have delved further and expanded this unique world where the land creates a home for every creature that arrives and creates a place where no one ages past adulthood. The Navigator is a charming re-imagining of Peter Pan with a new spin on the classic story and an adventure that takes these characters to new heights by creating a new Neverland that you'll want to fly away to.
