The Mystery of the Lost Avenger is a work of mystery fiction written for young adult readers by author Linda Maria Frank. Written as the fourth short novel in the Annie Tillery Mystery series, this book is intended for readers at the younger end of the teen spectrum as well as middle-grade readers. Combining elements of historical mystery, ghost stories, romance, and family drama, this engaging novel sees protagonist Annie discover the truth of her great-grandmother Charlotte, who served as a WASP during the Second World War. So begins an intriguing mystery of missing planes and repairing family ties along the way.
Author Linda Maria Frank has pitched this story at just the right level of detail and involvement so as not to overwhelm her target audience but has also left all of the juicy clues and historical flavor in place to give her mystery novel a deep intrigue to explore. Annie is a charming protagonist with lots of pep, and one whom younger readers can aspire to as she navigates not only the adventure of the tale but a new romance with boyfriend Ty and the effects of dealing with her mother’s newfound sobriety. What results is a deeply heartfelt tale that celebrates women and their inner strength from many different time periods and perspectives. Overall, I would definitely recommend The Mystery of the Lost Avenger for MG and YA readers, and indeed any reader seeking a new young investigative hero to follow.
