“The Mystery Box” by Dr. M. N. Nyatanga is a magical, mystical metal box discovered by the family dog, Mildew. The box contains the long lost key to the Kwoyome family’s secret treasures, which has remained lost for the past two generations, but has now apparently been found again. But the box is a strange one, with no easy way to open or enter it. But Grandfather Kwoyome had heard tales of it from his father and his grandfather who had been the one to lose the box originally. What secret treasures could this box contain? Would it lead them to a buried treasure chest full of gold and jewels? Would it contain some magic elixir? Would they figure out a way to open it so that they could find out?

Grandfather Kwoyome is a very wise old gentleman, and he knows better than to just take a hacksaw to the box. Indeed, he has heard many stories about this box while he was just a young lad growing up, and he knows a thing or two about it. But even he is taken completely by surprise when the secret treasures are finally revealed to the family. This story is pure magic from beginning to end. It captivates the readers, and carries them along for its amazing ride. Dr. Nyatanga’s talent for weaving an engaging tale is well presented in “The Mystery Box”, and her characters are true to life. Even the dog, Mildew, is amazingly dog-like! This is a wonderful story, left open to the possibility of future sequels. I, for one, sincerely hope there will be sequels so that I can continue to follow the adventures of the Kwoyome family. This book will grip young readers and not let them go until the final page. I strongly recommend this for middle grade readers, but adults will enjoy it, too.
