The Mortal Tempest is the third book in the Undercover Elementals series by Anna Durand and is well-crafted for fans of paranormal romance; a fascinating conclusion to an engaging trilogy. The narrative has strong hints of Roman mythology. Lindsey Porter hasn't had much time to enjoy her marriage with the sylph king Nevan when time shifts. A shattering earthquake heralds the arrival of Janus, returning from thousands of years of imprisonment and wanting his powers back. When time shifts, no one but Lindsey, the powerless god, and Max remember what came before the time shift. With the frequent shifts in time, Lindsey must defeat a powerful enemy and save those she loves. But she can't save anything or anyone without outwitting a time-traveling villain. Will the powers of the Janusites be enough?
Anna Durand has the gift of weaving elements from different genres into a single story: mythology, romance, time travel, and fantasy. The writing is awesome, rendered more exciting by the author's ability to use sentences that are measured, timely paragraph breaks that make for great dramatic effect, and vivid descriptions that evoke memorable imagery. The narrative is fast-paced and packed with action. The ideas of shifting worlds and time, and everyone losing their memories are unique and original and it determines the direction the plot takes and reinforces the conflict. The Mortal Tempest is written with intelligence, a deftly plotted novel that would make a great movie. It is a very delightful conclusion to a wonderful trilogy.
