If you like comic books, The Mootants vs. The Unstoppable Mega-Chicken by Derek Taylor Kent will be just up your alley. Kyma is a curious 11-month-old calf living a humdrum life on Lumpke's milk farm. All she wants is the freedom to roam the outside world and have fun and adventures. After running into the insane Dr. Hugo Cornelius Eggsplatt III, Kyma naively volunteers for an experimental Blooze drink that allows her to fly. Soon, her friends join in the fun and get their superpowers. But now, Dr. Eggsplatt's underling, Jerry, has somehow turned into a 50-foot mega-chicken abomination who wants to dominate the world with his army of chickens. Kyma and her friends must use their powers to stop Jerry from acting upon his destructive plans.
A seamless blend of action, adventure, and comedy makes The Mootants vs. The Unstoppable Mega-Chicken an absolute riot to read. Derek Taylor Kent's action-adventure tale is strikingly enhanced by some eye-catching artwork by Bright Jungle Studios and vibrant characters who pop out of the pages. Expect to be dropped amid the action from the first page onward, following Kyma as she unwittingly stumbles into an adventure of a lifetime. Each character feels distinct and brimming with personality. I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamic between Kyma, Pepper, Henry Jr., and Nervous Nelly. Even the villains are hysterically funny. This is a book for middle graders, especially those under twelve. So hop on for a wild ride!
