The Missionary Position narrates the adventure-packed, chaotic, and humorous story of an American couple in Russia and their tumultuous experience of the 1998 financial crisis. Tad Browne's initial goal was to arrive in Russia with his family as missionaries and to continue helping survivors of the Sakhalin earthquake. However, they were advised to keep their identity as missionaries to themselves because missionary work is forbidden in Russia. This was the first of their many deceptive acts as they find ways to navigate the bureaucratic bottleneck and overwhelming rules in Russia. Join Tad Browne in The Missionary Position as he transports 5000 Japanese-made shoes to an orphanage in Russia, desperately searches for kerosene to keep his family from freezing, produces Vladivostok's first performance and translations of some Christmas carols, and experiences several other adventures and challenges.
In The Missionary Position, you get a rich combination of wild stories, historical information, heartwarming acts of kindness, and extremely hilarious developments. Readers get a vivid, immersive view of Russia in the 1990s, including the "pervasive dull brown" of the roadside snow and the distances that are "enough to make a Texan cry." Tad Browne's brilliant way with words makes even the most basic information intriguing to read. I was greatly inspired by the various outstanding sacrifices that the author and his family made to supply the orphans, hospital workers, and others with the help they needed. Thrill-seekers, travel enthusiasts, and readers who enjoy true stories about narrow escapes involving the law will have a most enjoyable and memorable experience with The Missionary Position. It is a favorite among favorites for me—worth every single minute!
