The Midnight Rose by Catalina Paris is a magical adventure into another world with an assortment of well-rounded and endearing characters. Leo’s life changes in the blink of an eye when an attack sends him fleeing for his life, taking him away from the Alchemical Court. His role as an apprentice gave him access to his master’s notebook filled with runes that allowed him to craft a portal and escape. The portal whisks him off to the Realm of the Fey where he encounters a stunning queen and makes a new ally in Lady Lisandre. They discover that the Dark Alchemyst has startling plans for both of their worlds when he locates the Talismans of Atlantica. So they devise a plan to find the Talismans first. Their travels introduce them to Flora who is embarking on a journey of her own to find answers and Lucien who has a connection to Leo’s past. The four of them make an unlikely team as they work together to face dangers in a race to save their worlds.
Catalina Paris is quick to delve into the adventure while allowing readers time to get to know the motivations and personalities of the four central characters. Through them, different parts of the world are explored and you’re able to see the Realm of the Fey through them with each element serving a purpose in the story. Alchemists, faeries, and witches are significant components that shape the characters while grounding the magic to fit the rules that Paris has crafted. Magic is a key element in the story, answering why Lucien is considered a warlock, the alchemy that Leo uses, and the type of magic that Flora possesses. Magic also helps to differentiate the different locations and allows you to understand each place better. The writing style brings to life the feeling that you’re stepping into a fairytale world with locations such as Briar Wood. Paris captures little details that help set the tone of the adventure and draw you in deeper such as the clever use of language to establish these locations as being otherworldly. The theme of change is seen throughout. The Midnight Rose is a stunning fantasy adventure that takes you into another realm where otherworldly beings reside, magic abounds, and danger lurks.
