The Meek (Unbound Trilogy) by Jackson D. Palmer is a dystopian story with a vivid setting and a strong protagonist finding his way through a very difficult crisis. While visiting his friend in Los Angeles, Harlan discovers that people are dying around him. His friend, his neighborhood, and the entire city have fallen victim to a deadly disease. But this unknown disease doesn't affect Harlan. The problem is that he isn't alone. There are many others like him who survive the deadly disease, but not every survivor has the same sense of morality as Harlan. This brave man has to fight to stay alive long enough to make it home to his wife. Question is: will his pregnant wife, Jessica, still be alive by the time he gets home?
Jackson D. Palmer writes an apocalyptic story that leaves readers spellbound. The premise is very strong, a crisis involving a disease that is killing almost everyone. Readers would imagine that the few survivors would stick together to make life better while fighting against the odds, but then the ugly side of human nature takes control. I wanted to see if there is anyone the protagonist can trust. The suspense is strong and it reinforces the drama the author creates. I loved the protagonist, a man whose life is dramatically changed while he is traveling, who finds himself caught between life and death. The prose is wonderful, featuring vivid descriptions of elements of the setting and the emotional state of the characters. The Meek is a powerful story, a gorgeous treat for fans of dystopian stories.
