School is out for twins Marcus and Ellie, but their summer just got interesting when their grandparents told them that they will mind The Magic Shop during their vacation. It was to teach Marcus discipline and to improve Ellie's social skills. Looking after the shop was mostly boring and routine until the kids were tricked into selling a special item to a man. After that incident, things just got weirder, their grandfather was kidnapped, lives were threatened, Marcus met Elba, and the twins learned about real magic, a long standing family feud and what the mental asylum really is, and many more interesting albeit deadly things. How will the summer end for Marcus and Ellie in The Magic Shop by Justin Swapp.
The Magic Shop is adventurous, fast paced, and full of exciting and thrilling events. It was also cryptic and made me guess at and anticipate what was going to happen next. Where and what happened to the children’s parents, who stole the phoenix skull, who’s the magician at The Magic Box and a lot of other questions. Justin Swapp made everything and everywhere interesting - the phoenix, the dragon, the magic, Nevada, and even the hospital was fascinating. The characters were full of secrets which made getting to know them delightful. Marcus was playful and always gets in trouble and Ellie may seem to be always stuck in a book but when needed, both of them dominated. The ending was kind of a cliffhanger so I am totally looking forward to the next book.
