The Lost Soul (Enchena) (Volume 1) by KS Marsden is a young adult fantasy that brings two innocent people from our world into the richly magical world of Enchena. In Enchena, King Hrafn's reign has spread like a cancer through betrayal and war. In this land, the victors rewrite history. But there is a rebellion stirring that King Hrafn cannot outrun. Even the animals and the trees beg for a fresh start, something different than the evil kingdom that overpowers them. To overcome the curse, two people are brought from another world. But which one is the hero? Only one will help the rebels succeed in their quest. The other is undermining their efforts and could ultimately lead to their destruction.
This is a very interesting fantasy story that pits humans on either side of the war as the savior or as the opposition. I can't say too much about this story without giving away key spoilers, but fantasy readers will enjoy the plot of the story as well as the world building and descriptions. There is more than just fantasy. There is also adventure and political intrigue, mystery, and danger. The characters are relatable and interesting, and readers will find themselves rooting for certain characters to succeed and others to fall short. One of the main characters, Samantha, is a nice unforeseen heroine that readers will love as she follows her crush through a portal into an alternate world.
