The Lost Remnant, Book One: Pieces of Eden is a young adult fantasy novel by J.N. Race. The plot centers on a young woman named Azsha Daggerwall, who lives her life as part of a travelling gypsy tribe. Confined to this life by her overbearing mother, Azsha has yet to learn the real truth of her existence, and that the gods of her world have played a part in it. When she discovers her destiny, the story becomes a tale of one girl’s duty to restore magic, harmony and light to a forgotten, once-mythical realm, or else let the darkness and danger swallow the world and cast it into an uncertain future.
The world-building in The Lost Remnant is bulletproof, and I felt from the very first page that I was totally immersed in a brand new amazing world of gods, monsters and dear little Azsha. I loved her journey of growth and discovery of her own strength, which was set amidst a cast of marvellous side characters and superbly humanized villains, such as the cold, strict bishop Medesta, a particular favourite of mine. J.N. Race writes beautifully and isn’t afraid to convey medieval style grammar and lexis to her young audience, providing an authentic yet accessible narrative as Azsha explores the world around her. Sophisticated enough for adults to enjoy, yet full of excitement and interest for teen readers, I can safely say that The Lost Remnant is the opening to a series that many readers will be dying to see continued.
