The Long Shot by Chris Carpenter is a beautifully illustrated rhyming picture book about an underestimated racehorse. Although well-trained, the odds were stacked against the spirited filly that was to race on the Saratoga track. Despite rain adding complications to the race day, her trainers knew the young horse would give it her all. Anticipation quickly became exhilaration when the race finally began, and everyone in the stands saw the underrated filly take the lead. But could a horse that was such a long shot win the race against six other capable horses?
Many rhyming children’s books use silly verses or made-up words to entertain toddlers, but none compare to the emotional engagement Chris Carpenter offers in his poetry. Geared toward young ones, the rhythmic lyrics are short and have a perfect tempo for reading aloud. The storyline builds anticipation slowly, breaking into frenzied excitement when the race finally begins. Complementing the poetic tale, beautiful custom-painted artwork adorns each page, adding a traditional yet inviting feel to the book. I appreciate how encompassing the imagery is, allowing me to thoroughly visualize the setting and appreciate the enthusiasm of a horse race even though I haven’t personally been to a track. Select phrases and terms that may be new to younger audiences enable opportunities for discussion on horses and horse racing. Meanwhile, the book’s overall theme of overcoming impediments and doubts is motivational. With emotive poetry and exceptional illustrations, The Long Shot is an inspirational story that fully engages your senses.
