In The Tale of the Little Hedgehog and the Great Flood by Ian Humpheryes, Hedgehog lives in the woodland with his friends. One day, it started to rain. He was beginning to worry about his friends. He needed to make sure their homes were safe and dry. Off he went in the pouring rain to check on them. He came upon a stream that was deep and fast. His mouse friends lived along this roaring stream. The mice were worried it would not stop raining and the stream would soon flood their home. His friends, the squirrel, the badger, and the rabbit, were safe from the flood, but concerned about the mice as well. Hedgehog came upon the mice and learned that their house was surrounded by water. What were they to do now? He had an idea! He would help them build a new home in a toadstool. The badger helped the gopher who was also without a home. They worked together and helped him find a new home in a log. All the animals survived the flood and had new dry homes. The mice and the gopher learned that it is nice to have good friends to help when in need.
