Minnesota USA-born writer, Phyllis Smith, is an award-winning children's book author and illustrator, winning first place in the Firebird Book Awards category Children-Animals/Pets for the title "The Legend of Paisley Pete: A Magical Story About Abandoned Cats." This story is inspired by real life events when Phyllis's townhome community became overrun by feral cats prompting her, along with her cat whisperer neighbor, to tenderly find homes for all of them elsewhere and in their own homes.

Flynn finds himself on the roadside somewhere near the wood. He had been thrown out of a car. His little paws hurt, and he was scared, starting to realize that the beloved human he trusted so much had left him all alone. Or so it seems. Soon Flynn saw other cats who he assumed lived nearby. Otis and Winnie approached Flynn to invite him to their colony of abandoned cats. Remaining on the alert, Flynn followed them to meet Clancy, the leader of the colony, his wife, Tessa, and many other cats. They tell Flynn the story of the unwanted cats and how they struggle to survive. There is something unusual about their appearance, but Flynn was too tired to absorb all the details. Will he find shelter and new friends to heal his broken trust? The Legend of Paisley Pete: A Magical Story About Abandoned Cats by Phyllis Smith is a wonderful account of love, friendship, responsibility, and finding new hope in a cruel world.
The Legend of Paisley Pete offers a whole range of amazing characters. I was impressed with the personal features of every cat lovingly described by the author. Phyllis Smith skillfully outlined the stage of denial Flynn experienced after being abandoned and in doing so enriched the book with psychological depth. The book is an emotional read. It teaches young readers to be responsible for those who depend on them in every possible sense. I appreciated the honesty in the story, for it speaks about unmasked cruelty toward animals. At the same time, this message is delicate enough not to be shocking or disturbing for children. I loved the beautiful and bright illustrations by the author. Vivid colors and lovely images complement the narrative that would not disappoint even adult readers, thanks to the unexpected twists and turns of the plot. The writing style will help young readers widen their vocabulary without complicating the storyline. I highly recommend this book to children from 8 years of age and to all animal lovers.
