The Last Night on Earth by Victor Davis is a dystopian short story. David and Kara live in New York City, but not the New York City that you and I know. This is a city set in the future, a city that is barely standing while World War III rages about them. Neither has any hope for the future, yet neither is prepared to give up. They live in a world that is about to end, a world where no one cares anymore, and where there is no right or wrong. They live in a world where, if you die, the telephone company leaves an obituary on your answering machine for all who ring to hear. This is a story of despair, of losing it all but never giving in until the last.
The Last Night on Earth by Victor Davis is a brilliantly written short story set in the future. It is a very dark tale, a very depressing one that gets more so as you read. It’s a tale of having it all and losing everything, layer by layer, until there is nothing left but hope – and even that goes eventually. It’s interesting that this story was born from two separate dreams that the author had, bound together by one singe piece of inspiration and forever written into history. This is a very well written piece, penned by an author who has a real way with words, a real way of drawing a reader in, bit by bit, like a spider pulling a fly into his web. Despite the darkness, it is a story of hope and that shows through the depths of the despair.
