Teni Abegunde is an American author, realist, and founder of Cataphrase (Movie in a Book) and is best known for his Cataphrase movie books: The Blue Hostage, and The Priceless Chinese Maid in America. Teni started out as a ghostwriter, writing jokes, poems, blogs, and songs. As the saying goes: “If you don’t see the book you want on the shelves, write it.” In 2013, his interest in science, comedy, movies, and stories inspired him to create the idea of Cataphrase. Born in Washington, DC, in a family of three, he attended Westwood College before he became an author.

The King Of All Liars is a work of humorous fiction by author Teni Abegunde. Detailing true and not so true anecdotes from the author’s life, this book is billed as the first ‘sit-down’ comedy, in the opposite sense to 'stand-up.' The approach is simple in that you read the book as though its author was a stand-up comic delivering the lines to you in your own home. From early life to the here and now, Teni makes it clear that he wants the lazy life, and that this book is a lazy, luxurious way to enjoy comedy without having to go out to a show.
Teni Abegunde’s comedic style is mostly observational, and the book certainly feels like he is directly addressing an unseen audience in the stand-up comedy fashion. As with all humor, not every joke will land for everyone and tastes may vary, but the concept and the friendly style of writing intrigued me enough to keep reading on. Some of the stories in The King Of All Liars are pretty incredulous, and others point out the very amusing and irritating parts of everyday life that we can all relate to. Teni makes some surprisingly poignant remarks about life in general and, although the book didn’t make me laugh out loud exactly, it was enjoyable throughout and left me thinking about it all afterwards. Recommended for readers who want to smile and gripe about the world at the same time. Definitely a read you have to try out for yourself.
