Mason Night is a fairly typical eleven-year-old boy who knows he is loved by his mother and grandfather, even though his dad abandoned the family many years ago. Now, Mason’s mom has a boyfriend and, although he is not happy at first, Mason comes to respect and love Neil Moon. The Journeys of Mason Night: Night Meets Moon relates the events that change Mason’s life dramatically. Mrs. Night sells their home and she and Mason move from Flushing, New York to a huge estate in the English countryside.
Author Linden Mize details Mason’s feelings as this move takes place. There are plenty of emotions involved as Mason leaves his grandfather and friends behind, but the good news is that he is able to make new friends in England among the staff and the Tate family with their cute daughter, who is in Mason’s class. He also trusts in his faith that things will work out for the best. The biggest surprise of all, though, is that now Mason can hear and see ghosts. As he and the ghost of William Hart set out to put the spirits of earth-bound children to rest, Mason’s journeys really take off.
The Journeys of Mason Night: Night Meets Moon is an entertaining YA novel that incorporates the supernatural, traditional faith in God, and plain old-fashioned values. Emotional growth is a big element in this story and Linden Mize handles the death of people and pets delicately with a firm belief in the afterlife. The characters are well developed and diverse, especially the various ghosts that Mason encounters. The dialogue blends American and British English as Mason learns his new culture, and the descriptions of people, history and the scenery are quite detailed and interesting. Excellent story! I loved the characters and how they work together. Linden Mize’s The Journeys of Mason Night: Night Meets Moon is a wonderful story and the beginning of what could be a tremendous series.
