The Journey is a work of fiction in the science fiction, fantasy, and speculative sub-genres, and was penned by author E. A. Bagby. The first novella-length episode in The Feigned Moon of Entiria Epic Serial collection, we begin this epic adventure with the set-up of the central characters and an introduction to the world where they have grown up. Giels believes in destiny amongst his people, and as he reaches the cusp of adulthood, he feels his future life is laid before him very well indeed. So when Erikal, an eccentric inventor, offers Giels and his sweetheart, Cleo, the chance to travel beyond the far reaches of their world, so begins a question of risk versus reward.
Author E. A. Bagby has crafted the opening episode to a fascinating conceptual world and a journey that will surely build into a truly fantastical adventure. I enjoyed the episodic setup, which was very much like digesting a pilot to a TV show, and the introduction of the flying machine and the characters who will undertake the journey certainly leaves you wanting more. The idea of Giels being a storyteller is a wonderful thematic touch that layers stories within stories and gives us a rich sense of culture and mystery. Bagby’s prose offers vivid descriptions and solid worldbuilding for both the tribal setting and the promise of the worlds beyond what is known. Overall, I would highly recommend The Journey for readers seeking to embark upon a brand new and exciting sci-fi and fantasy adventure.
