Émilie Cossette has done a great service for all who read The Jewels of Bermuda. Émilie has written a lovely adventure for children while at the same time remembering the importance of taking care of the environment. By showing children the variety of sea life in the Bermuda region, she helps children understand the importance of the animals such as jellyfish, whales, sea turtles, etc. On a trip to the beach, little Stella rescues a sea turtle from a plastic trap. As a way of thanks, the sea turtle, Duffy, gives Stella a grand tour of the sea life in the area. Émilie’s creativity comes out as Stella and Duffy discover and learn about how beautiful things are below the surface of the water.
In The Jewels of Bermuda, Émilie Cossette gives a wonderful little book concerning sea life and the need to protect it. Mayank Sharma does a superb job illustrating the underwater scenes and the rest of the book. In entertaining yet informative language, Émilie engages children in the wonders of undersea life. She also includes an old shipwreck. Stella, the star of the book, learns about the various sea life in the Bermuda area. Émilie has also included information about conservation and a special note about a conservation project to protect sea turtles. This would be an enjoyable book to read to/with your child to encourage them to learn about nature and how to protect wildlife. Start an ongoing conversation with your child concerning reuse, recycle, and reduce.
