Do you like coffee? I’m sure the adults around you depend on it every day, usually to get the day started. Do you know where coffee originates? It looks dark brown when people drink it, but it actually comes from a red bean. It’s the roasting that turns the red bean brown. Coffee has an interesting history, one that is often overlooked as people take for granted the dark brown drink they enjoy so much. But, imagine a single coffee bean with a great big adventure story, one that will rival the heroes you usually read about, like Captain Marvel and Superman.

Cambraia Fonseca Fernandes’ comic book story, The Incredibles Coffee Adventures Around the World, is a clever way to teach young readers about the history of coffee. This includes the many countries and their varying cultures at the time coffee was first introduced to them. The protagonist is a single red coffee bean, who tells his story in the first-person narrative as if he’s addressing a group of children. It’s story hour, in a way, and the exciting revelation of coffee’s discovery and introduction to the world is the adventure. The illustrations, as with any comic book, lead the story forward. It’s cleverly told, with bits of humor and lots of excitement (particularly in times and places where coffee was prohibited), as the protagonist proudly proclaims, “I am always your friend, for all hours!” The author and artist has put considerable thought into making this an enjoyable and informative read.
