The Impress of Heaven (In the Den of the English Lion Book 2) by Neal Roberts is a historical mystery that takes place in London in the 1600s. The story starts with Serjeant Noah Ames accepting the job to investigate the Earl of Essex for accepting a truce with Irish rebels. Noah notices a missing watermark on a map of English military positions in Ireland and becomes suspicious. When he shares this information with his friend Jonathan, the barrister, they begin to dig deeper into the mystery and possible conspiracy. Jonathan begins spending time with Noah's daughter, Lady Jessica, whose only concern is to marry into nobility. But with Noah's discoveries, Jonathan and Lady Jessica begin a perilous journey all over England that threatens their safety. They must find the answers...but at what cost?
The Impress of Heaven is a well-researched and very engaging historical fiction piece. I absolutely loved the setting and found every detail to be stunning beautiful and accurate. Roberts did an excellent job of recreating this gorgeous historical world with enough subterfuge and underlying darkness to keep me completely engaged. The characters were very well-written and seemed realistic and authentic to their time period. I was immediately drawn into this intriguing story and wanted to know more about these characters, their world, and the mysteries within it. I didn't want to put this book down and was disappointed when the story was over because I enjoyed it so much.
