Oggie is a ghost. But Nikki doesn’t believe in ghosts. Neither do some of her friends. However, when they study some photographs Patti’s grandmother took at an old graveyard, they’re baffled by the misty smudges off to the side. Time to investigate. Nikki and her friends are good at investigating. They’ve done it before. Especially where there’s a legend, there’s bound to be a mystery waiting to be solved. And this legend/mystery introduces the Civil War era and the battles between Confederate and Yankee forces at Battlefield Ridge and Fort Star. You see, Oggie, when he appears, is dressed in a Yankee uniform. But is he a Yankee? And why is he still haunting this area? And why does he reach out to Nikki?
Rita Monette’s young people’s mystery novel, The Haunting Near Battlefield Ridge: Nikki Landry Swamp Legends book 5, is a fun-packed adventure that will have young readers glued to the story from start to finish. With a powerful plot with a steady rise of tension and excitement, good character sketches and descriptive passages, and a few line drawings here and there, the story advances quickly to its climax and resolution. The characters are definitely believable: a group of eleven-year-olds, complete with their powerful sense of curiosity and impeccable ability to reason things out, especially a mystery evolving from a legend. They know how to do their research and the author’s knowledge of the Civil War era and this particular region is evident. This is a book that readers of all ages will enjoy as they learn more about the Civil War.
