The Guardian and the War is the third and final book of The Chronicles of the Protector series. Author T.A. Richards has provided readers with many tense moments and some characters rich with reservations and courage. In this novel, many species of the kingdoms have been sent to find the successor to the Patron/Protector. But in order to find the ancient Corsair Eleazar, they must fight against the evil Gnomon and the Vomica. These are fierce creatures enlisted to carry through with the plan of Evil versus Good, and they are formidable opponents. But there are also Dwarves, Samaria, Tree Elves, Drakons, the Royal Guard and Corsairs to help protect nobility and fight for the good of the various kingdoms.
I loved the characters of Eber, Alea, Axiom and Eleazar, as well as the highly questionable character of Captain Root. The good guys were, as the author says, a "motley crew" and they will endear themselves to readers. The bad guys such as the Vomica and the Gnomon forces were highly believable and you just wanted the motley crew to do them in. The interactions and understanding between Axiom and his new animal friend were often touching. At times, the violence seemed a bit excessive but, given the nature of the evil about them, the defenders of the Protector did an admirable job. There's a nice twist at the end for those who think they have it all figured out. The Guardian and the War is not for the faint of heart, but it does tell a story with a moral that will be pleasing to most readers.
