The Grumpy Fairy: A Grumpy Fairy Tale Book 1 by Elizabeth Dunlap is a witty read for those who love fairy tales and sarcasm. There are funny magical bits, like frog princes begging to be unenchanted, and clever fairy world bits, like learning that fairies are naturally tiny but can make themselves regular size. I especially liked the friendship between the fairy and her bird friend. This unlikely friendship gives the first clue that there is more to the story. Don’t let Drusinella’s prickly exterior fool you—inside, there’s a real, complex person. Drusinella’s quirky view of life drew me into the story, and I enjoyed the details that turned the fairy tale genre upside down. Dunlap creates an interesting premise (a grumpy fairy exiled from Fairy Land) and a chain of events that kept me reading to the end. I won’t spoil the ending for you, but it’s just as surprising as the grumpy fairy.

My favorite part of the book is Drusinella’s attitude. She works hard to keep up her grumpiness until we begin to wonder why. We see Drusinella processing the first inklings of inner change, and she reacts just as we would expect: grumpily! But through it all, we can’t help cheering for Drusinella and hoping that she will resolve some issues while staying herself. For those who enjoy a light read with interesting characters, The Grumpy Fairy by Elizabeth Dunlap is fun! And for those who have grumpy days, visit Drusinella’s world for an hour or two. Laughter is the best medicine. This is a wonderful story!
