The Grumpy Bull by Adrienne Noel follows a bull as he makes fun of every animal that is different from him. In the end, he learns a valuable lesson. I think this story has a wonderful message for children as well as adults. Everyone is different and special in their own way. You do not have to be the same as everyone else. It is all right to be different. That is what makes you unique.
I love that The Grumpy Bull is written in rhyme. The rhymes are not difficult and my 3-year-old was able to read it with ease. The story flowed very nicely because of this. The part in the story about the dandelion was my favorite.
“All things are beautiful,
like this lovely dandelion.
Some see it as a weed,
we see it as a flower,
they creep up everywhere
showing their vibrant color.”
Noel’s words brought back memories to me of how I used to see dandelions the same way. As a child you do see the dandelion as a flower, but as an adult it turns into a weed. It was nice to be reminded about how children see things. The illustrations in the book are vibrant and very colorful. They capture the eye immediately.
I hope The Grumpy Bull will help children to learn that not everyone has to be the same. I wish that there were more books with this same message out there. This book will help stomp out bullying. I recommend this book to every child. There is an important lesson in this story that people need to learn.
