The Great American by Michele Wallace Campanelli is the story of Jennifer and Frank and what they went through during the September 11 attacks. Jennifer works in her aunt’s café and Frank is a lawyer. On September 11, Frank was scheduled to have an interview in the Twin Towers. That interview would have made him partner. But before the interview even started, the attacks happened. David, Jennifer’s brother, is a firefighter who went after Frank to try to save him. Jennifer and Frank were just regular people, one of the many that the September 11 incident affected and this is their story.
“Glancing down the street, she knew America would never be the same again.” This is my favorite line from the book because it is very true and it summarizes, in a few short words, what they all must have realized that day. What happened on September 11 is truly a tragic event. I know I will never grasp the real fear and all the other emotions of those people who experienced the incident first hand. But reading this book gave me an inkling of what they might have been feeling that unfortunate day. Michele Wallace Campanelli made her characters so believable and realistic that I felt compassion and sympathy for what they went through. The scenes were written very well that I was able to imagine the sounds, the smoke, the tears, the fears, and all that was taking place. Very good book, indeed. This book tells a great story of what, despite adversities, it means to be an American.
