Eileen Bader Williams is a charismatic and energetic woman who relates her life story from her difficult childhood in the '50s to her wedding in the early '80s. Eileen left her family and college to follow an uncertain path. As a young girl, she questioned many things and did not conform to the norms of society. Eileen tried to find peace by following God's teachings when she joined the Unification Church - a religion considered to be a cult. It caused her to face discrimination and moments of hardship, even with her colleagues. It was nevertheless an opportunity to prove herself and get to know various parts of America. Her experiences made her deal with people from different cultures. The Gosling Bride: A coming of age faith memoir is a story of courage and determination. Eileen knew her life would not be easy, but she dared to take many risky decisions.
Eileen Bader Williams has an unusual way of expressing herself. She is honest and knows when to use irony and analogies. The Gosling Bride is largely a fun read and I loved the moments of humor. Life had its difficult moments, although these are always told with objectivity. For example, Eileen mentions on several occasions how difficult it was to raise funds. She speaks about discrimination against her but also relates good experiences and describes the kind people she met, making the point that there are all types. She also conveys her despair and desire to give up at times, but how situations developed that encouraged her to continue. It was exciting to learn from such an intense story. In addition, I liked it because it has many cultural references relating to those times. The book is perfect for inspiring us to keep going, just as Eileen did.
