The Good Night Knight by Josh Will is a humorous, beautifully illustrated book written in rhyme. A knight who guards the city at night keeps the townspeople safe and happy. He knows each of them and treats them like friends. They repay him with all kinds of food. Actually, more than the Night Knight could eat. He didn't want anything to go to waste, but what can he do with all this food? Too much gravy, bread, buns, and muffins. Each day the Night Knight returned home with dragon's scales and crowns. The townspeople were happy until the baker's son discovered a secret about the Night Knight. Oh, my goodness! How would they react to the Night Knight's strange way of protecting the town?
I was hooked from the beginning line in Josh Will's The Good Night Knight and stayed involved in the story until the surprise ending. The illustrations are as engaging as the text. Readers of all ages will enjoy this story. The topic will interest readers who are difficult to connect with. Not only is it a really fun read, but the story could be used by teachers and parents to discuss the theme of conflict resolution, and seeking to understand from Covey's Seven Habits. It can also be used as a model for teaching rhyming words and synonyms. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a great read to bond with their children, as well as for teachers in a classroom setting. I wish I'd had this book when I taught.
