The God That I Know: Psalms for the Modern World by John Rogers is an inspirational book written in the form and pattern of psalms. In fact, this author deserves the title of a psalmist. In the introduction to these contemporary psalms, the author shares the story of how the inspiration to write them came to him. While driving his son to college one day, he had an enjoyable conversation with Jason that eventually led to the question of God and evil. While Jason is very intelligent, articulate, and thoughtful, he also asks questions that puzzle many people: Why does God allow suffering and evil? In these psalms, the author creates his own unique relationship with God, giving readers tools to connect with God, to find their own language of praise and worship, and to shift their perception towards a God who genuinely cares about them.
The book is composed of seventy-five psalms of varying lengths, each of them capturing a unique thought, experience, inspiration, and prayer. From the very first psalm, the author invites the reader to have a new consciousness. He invites them to find God in the mundanity of everyday experience. The collection of psalms will have a strong appeal to readers with different tastes. Poetry fans will find wonderful lines and imagery to revel in; spiritually inclined people will find material for meditation and prayer, and those who love evocative writing will find delight in the depths of the author’s thoughts. The God That I Know: Psalms for the Modern World is a book that opens a path for readers to rediscover the God who dwells among them. Featuring themes of praise, worship, gratitude, mercy, reconciliation, and many more, this book is the next best thing I have read in poetry after the psalms of David.
