The Genius of George Wright by William Coale is a non-fiction biography that follows the life of the musician George Wright. This book would appeal most to a diverse audience of young adults and adults who are musicians, music students, enjoy music, or have an interest in learning about George Wright. This book is not just about the legendary theatre organist, but the man behind the legend. George Wright was a man with a multi-faceted personality that had a great appreciation for the arts and he was not too proud to admit his lack of training, which led him to taking lessons from Dr. Irene Robertson.
The Genius of George Wright by William Coale is a well-written reference book filled with details of the life and career of George Wright. Prior to reading this book, I had never even heard the name George Wright and, after reading this book, I feel like the high school music classes that I took left a large gap in the curriculum by not even mentioning him. The author did a simply spectacular job in researching George Wright and then condensing that knowledge into a single book.
At the beginning, I was worried that the length of the book would leave me feeling bored before I was even half way done, but that worry was for naught. This book is both educational and engaging as every chapter helped me to gain a better understanding of who George Wright was and how he became such a famous organist. I liked the fact that this book is a scholarly resource that did not read as a story book like so many biographies. I also feel that The Genius of George Wright by William Coale should be a part of the music curriculum in high schools.
