The Freedom Challenge For Men: 60 Days to Untie the Cords that Bind You, by Paul and Dawn Scott Damon, is a powerful, compassionate guide to help men transform their lives into the person they are called to be. This book is for women too, who want the best for their sons, brothers, fathers, boyfriends, or husbands in their lives. Sometimes men have a hard time admitting vulnerability, discussing emotions, or accepting help, but this book opens a door to possibilities in an encouraging, practical way that is also faith-based. In this specific plan, men can learn to face and let go of the harmful behavioral patterns that keep them on a treadmill of self-doubt and failure. Some of the terms and issues discussed may sound familiar--toxic thinking, damaging self-talk, depression, lying, and more. The 60-day strategy is called The Freedom Challenge because it not only helps men confront their issues but does so in a positive, reassuring, empowering way that can lead them to healing and happiness. Part of the process uses Scripture, and other parts pose questions to ponder with "guided confessions and prayers".
What I like best about this book is the overall upbeat tone and attitude--that, yes, lives are broken, pain is real, and healing is hard, but you can come through on the other side, and part of that is changing the way you think and what you believe about yourself. No matter how bleak your past seems, there is a way to start over with a brand new outlook for the future, but it takes a step of faith and daily dedication. Even though this is a self-help book, I also consider it spiritual teaching--about finding salvation and redemption in Jesus Christ, to be precise. The material is easy to digest, well-organized, and should be relatable to most people. Spirituality may not be on your shortlist of ways to overcome your past and have a better life, but give it some thought as you read; keep an open mind, and you may come to the conclusion that it's exactly what you need. If you feel you've fallen far away from God, or never knew Him at all, The Freedom Challenge For Men: 60 Days to Untie the Cords that Bind You, by Paul and Dawn Scott Damon, could lead you back.
