“I sense a powerful presence from you. I see your future is in the stars. You have a great destiny. But beware . . . many dark spirits follow you. Curses and hexes many cast upon you, for such beauty makes many jealous of you, the one who bears the golden touch.” In The Foretold Story (Book 1: Part 1) by Katia R. V. Reed, Midas Aurulien is pursuing his dream to work for the sought-after Skyscraper Empire, the crown jewel of the technological future after the tragedy of his parents' deaths. Set in a future world of New York City, he has to face many obstacles and recurring supernatural events that have haunted him since he was little. However, his meeting with Joyce Colleen Skyscraper will change both their fates in ways that they would never expect.
The futuristic world-building is interesting; most of the proposed tech is plausible and already exists in the real world, albeit not as advanced. Narrated in straightforward prose, the supernatural element in this sci-fi story certainly adds a prominent and intriguing factor to the plot development. It also has several surprising twists which will explain Midas's uniqueness. Part of the story’s appeal is the future possibilities of technologies in all areas of life - whether they stem from good or corrupt intentions - which lead to a wide exploration of worrying issues such as cyber crimes. Overall, Katia R. V. Reed's The Foretold Story is notably a thought-provoking choice for readers who want their sci-fi tales intrinsically related to the current world whilst its fantastical aspects serve the story's sci-fi side.
