The Folksinger by J.B. DiNizo is a heartwarming, yet tragic, tale of two friends who grew up together, forming their own band. It’s a story of one who has a wonderful family life and one who was sexually abused. Ted Peterson, who was sexually abused by his mother, lived in his own world. He escaped within his music. Jim McFarland had a wonderful family and became close friends with Ted. Knowing there was a family problem, Jim never confronted him, until Ted finally told him the truth about what had been going on. Both became accomplished musicians and formed their own band. They added two others, Dave and Barry, to become The Green Street Four. Ted, who was never able to overcome his childhood, became a homosexual and addicted to drugs. Even though they played worldwide, Ted carried that monkey on his back, and it eventually led to his death in Japan. With that, the band broke up, and Jim went on to do what he always wanted to do, become a music teacher. He also added on the duties of a school counselor, to help children who are in situations like Ted's, to keep his memory alive.
This is an outstanding book that, when the reader gets started, will feel like he/she is reading an actual account, even though the book is fiction. Written as if the main character is sitting there beside him/her relating the story of not only his life but the other three, the reader will be drawn right into the book. Highly recommended, excellent book!
