The Fire Ignites (The Tenth Dimension Volume 1) by Mr. A.D. Walker is a children's science fiction and fantasy coming of age story where a group of friends gain new powers. All of this occurs after a hunted man from another dimension gives them powers because the Dark King is hunting him. At first, the powers seem to be really cool and the children spend a lot of time playing around with them and learning how to use the orbs, but gradually things change and the action ramps up as different creatures come in, and other things look for the powers they received.

The story itself was well put together and entertaining, and the entire work is fairly short as the author spends a lot of time setting up for the sequel. Each chapter is framed to take on another of the group who were given powers, and it makes an excellent narrative device to rotate around the children like this. I liked the characters and the way they interacted with one another, and the author did a very good job of introducing each of them into the story and building up for the events that will be taking place in later volumes. I definitely think that many children would enjoy this story, and it never delves into topics that would be disapproved of by parents. The Fire Ignites by Mr. A.D. Walker is a great sci-fi and fantasy novel for children, and even adults would find something to enjoy in the story, which makes it a real winner.

In The Fire Ignites by A.D. Walker, Matt is your average middle schooler. He oversleeps, is often late for the bus. He's got a crush, a best friend, and the class weirdo. What do all these kids have in common? They've attracted the attention of Quintal, a being from the Dark Dimension. To prevent the king of the Dark Dimension from causing an inter-dimensional war, he is entrusting the kids with super powers.

The prologue provided an interesting hook to draw the reader in, with betrayal and the threat of violence as well as the beginning of world-building: "Send me to the 10th dimension!" The story kept going at a very rapid pace, keeping me engaged and entertained with the quick progression of the plot. The superpowers were an interesting blend of spirit animal and elemental powers, both of which have been done separately, but I haven't encountered them together before.

The writing style is not particularly fleshed out or descriptive. On the day we "meet" Matt and his friends, we go through almost an entire day of school in under one page. I would really have liked to see some more thorough descriptions of characters, settings, and friendships - both the tangible things like imagery and physical descriptions, and the intangible things like how the characters felt about each other and treated one another. I felt like I didn't get attached to these characters because I didn't know them very well, even by the middle half of the book.

While I didn't get all the information I wanted out of this book, it is the first in a series. I would definitely continue on with the series, and hope that as the kids grow up, their personalities would become more developed. A.D. Walker has created an intriguing world concept that will be fun to follow along with at the same rapid pace that has been set by The Fire Ignites.

The Fire Ignites: The Tenth Dimension, Volume 1 is a science fiction/fantasy novel for children and preteens written by A.D. Walker. Matt did not like getting up early for school, and that day was no exception. He indulged in a long hot shower and then rushed through breakfast and out the door. His best friend, Adam, was waiting for him, and the two boys ran to catch the bus which was predictably on time, unlike them. It was a typical day at first, until third period which was lunchtime. Matt was nonplussed by the presence of Liz at their usual table. While Jess was a good friend and lots of fun, Liz was a secret crush. After lunch, just as Matt was headed towards his fourth period class, he heard the fire alarm sound and headed, with some relief, towards the designated exit. He joined the rest of the school by the soccer field. Everyone’s spirits were high at the impromptu break from school and the heady warm spring weather. But then Matt heard a deep rumbling, and, turning, saw a huge lion standing in the forest. Matt couldn’t believe his eyes and he felt paralyzed by fear. Adam, who was next to him, was also staring, but he saw an owl, which seemed to be beckoning him to follow. The two boys followed the animals into a clearing and were surprised to see Carl, Jess, and Liz also following animals, though each kid could only see their own animal.

A.D. Walker’s science fiction/fantasy novel for children and preteens, The Fire Ignites: The Tenth Dimension, Volume 1, is exciting and fast-paced. I enjoyed seeing how five kids without all that much in common become a dedicated and powerful team after their encounter with an alien visitor, Quintal. While Matt and Adam had been best friends since they were small, their relationship develops new dimensions as they learn to call up and use their new powers. Walker’s choice of characters for this story is inspired, and their newfound unity works quite well. The plot is imaginative and fresh, and there’s no lack of challenges and suspenseful moments as the team comes up against three powerful antagonists. I enjoyed this well-written coming of age tale which follows not one, but five different characters, and I’m looking forward to Volume 2 in The Tenth Dimension Series. The Fire Ignites: The Tenth Dimension, Volume 1 is most highly recommended.

The Tenth Dimension - The Fire Ignites by AD Walker is an excellent look into the minds of teenagers and offers a new look into the world of fantasy-fiction. The story begins in another world where an alien creature Quintal who is the Dark Knight of the land is running through dark dungeons, intent on escaping capture by his father Malgathor the Dark King. Quintal knows that the balance of the 9 dimensions must be preserved, or Malgathor will destroy the balance resulting in chaos over the universe, and he escapes to the 10th Dimension through a Portal that brings him to Earth. On Earth the Dark Prince manifests himself as projections of animals, and appears differently in the minds of 5 young school going children, guiding them into the forest till they come face to face with him. Quintal communicates and projects amazing powers into the beings of the young teenagers, before vanishing to another dimension.

AD Walker deepens mystery after mystery, appropriately naming this book The Fire Ignites! The story leaps into a highly fantasized new arena on Earth, one where new powerful beings emerge from another dimension in pursuit of Quintal. The reader is left amazed as the young teens learn how to harness and apply the powers given to them by the Dark Prince to battle the other powerful beings from the home world of Quintal. The formatting of the book is good and the flow of the story is fluid and seamless. The protagonists are believable while still containing a wealth of fantasy to thrill readers. The Tenth Dimension is a well written and creatively developed original fantasy that is sure to enthrall its readers.
