In The Fight for Equity in the Bronx: Changing Lives and Transforming Communities One Scholar At a Time, Dr. Elaine Ruiz Lopez describes her life growing up in the South Bronx where the challenges facing the Puerto Rican community are enormous. Poverty, hunger, crime, sex predators, and drug addictions are some of them. There are also numerous fires caused by greedy landlords that leave many families traumatized. Another thing that had a huge impact on the author was the education system based on tracking and putting students in various groups. The system doesn't provide equal learning opportunities for all students. Elaine also had to deal with teenage pregnancy, and in high school, she dropped out and joined night school instead. After becoming an educator, she has to deal with workplace discrimination despite putting all her efforts into ensuring that her students get a better education.
The Fight for Equity in the Bronx by Dr. Elaine Ruiz Lopez is an eye-opener on various social issues, such as how the education system, poverty, and other factors affect educational outcomes. She rightly points out that minorities have a right to receive an education that is socially responsive and culturally competent. This thought-provoking work also got me thinking about the extent to which various stakeholders should get involved with educating our children. Readers will also appreciate the author's resilience and commitment to her community, and I believe the book will inspire many others to take an active role in their communities. I am looking forward to reading something else by this author.
