The Ferryman and the Sea Witch is an epic fantasy novel by D. Wallace Peach. When one of the daughters of the sea witch dies due to the seamen of Brid Clarion, she takes revenge on those she holds responsible for her daughter's death. However, a young teenager's small act of kindness has him roped into a bargain with the sea witch. Callum is now the Ferryman, the only one allowed to sail across the Deep until Brid Clarion pays its debt to the sea witch with royal blood. Meanwhile, an exchange of hostages between the warring islands of Brid Clarion and Haf Killick doesn't go according to plan when Queen Caspia of Haf Killick chooses betrayal. It is now left to Callum to find a way to save his wife and daughter while striking one last bargain with the sea witch.
Fantasy lovers will have their appetites fully sated with The Ferryman and the Sea Witch. D. Wallace Peach's plotting is intricate, with some unexpected reveals in the narrative that will take readers by surprise. The characters have well-developed personalities, and their backstories make their actions and motives easy to discern. Callum's relationships and responsibilities give agency to his actions, and as a protagonist, you can't ask for better qualities in a fantasy hero. He almost always does what he needs to do. Caspia is a compelling antagonist who always seems to stay one step ahead of her enemies. I very much enjoyed the book and will recommend it to fantasy readers.
