The Farm Fires by Laurie Loveman is the third book in the historical fiction mystery series, the Firehouse Family, preceded by book one, Memories, and book two, The Quarry. Reading as a stand-alone (but definitely enhanced by the first two installments), Loveman returns readers to the Great Depression and small-town Woodhill, Ohio. An investigation into a string of fires in nearby Dalesville by the Woodhill Fire Department turns even more sinister when a dead body is discovered. Captain Freddy Pratter races toward the challenge, while Dalesville returnee Glynis Barneshill Hampton seeks refuge at her family dairy farm. The pair experiences a near-instant spark of their own and must overcome past obstacles and present dangers to see if they can nurture a kindling attraction into a fully developed romance.
Man, do I love books set during America's Depression, especially when the details are rich and the historical aspects are on point. Laurie Loveman delivers on both fronts in The Farm Fires, weaving mystery and romance into a gradually building storyline that allows readers to savor the many moments she brings to life. Freddy and Glynis are well-developed and layered characters and the converging of their stories (and the baggage they're both carrying) is fun—even if a bit angsty—to follow. The writing is clean, precise, and accurate with beautiful descriptions and dialogue that feels authentic. Fortunately, those who find the same pleasure in this series as I have will not have to wait for the fourth book, as Demise of the Horse Fairy has already been released.
