The Fantastic Phantasmic Detective Agency And the Woebegone Oddity of the Underworld by D.L. Dugger is a hilarious, wonderfully wrought investigative novel with a setting that stretches beyond the physical world. Readers are introduced to exemplary young detectives, Toby, Abby, and Billy, who offer their impeccable services to ghostly clients. It’s not until they receive a deceptively simple request to retrieve a ghost cat, Fluffy, from a nearby cemetery for one of the residents of OtherWorld StopOver that their skills are really put to the test. Things escalate when a new request arrives, but are the detectives prepared for such a challenge?
D.L. Dugger writes with alacrity and has succeeded in creating a world that is both strange and familiar, giving it unique rules and principles. One of the qualities of this book that drew me in is the author’s narrative style — light and filled with numerous humorous instances. It is interesting to see how the author creates a neat intersection between the physical and the yonder world. The language is beautiful and it flows with power and grace, and readers will be amused to see the way the author plays with words when it comes to naming places and characters. The conflict is strong and it builds up fast. This is the kind of book that will keep the reader laughing heartily, entertained by the idiosyncrasies of the characters and the fun. I enjoyed the originality in this work and the author’s confident writing. The Fantastic Phantasmic Detective Agency And the Woebegone Oddity of the Underworld was a joy ride for me. It will keep you laughing for many hours, even after you have turned the last page. It is a perfect blend of fantasy and adventure for young readers.
