The Falcon, the Wolf, and the Hummingbird is a work of fiction in the historical fiction, adventure, and interpersonal drama subgenres. It is suitable for the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Martha Engber. This captivating tale, set in pre-colonial southern New England, follows our protagonist Pino as she fights to save her tribe from the formidable Pagassett Nation, known for its destructive conquests. As her tribe faces imminent attack, Pino seizes the opportunity to redeem herself and protect her people. With the help of her forbidden love, Tow, and tribal leaders who recognize her talents, she orchestrates a covert influence on the conflict. However, her true adversary turns out to be Meesha, a former near-slave of the invaders. Through their unique perspectives, Pino and Meesha forge a profound sisterhood while battling their inner demons.

Author Martha Engber has crafted an immersive experience in a world of tribal conflict and powerful characters, taking readers on the dual journeys of Pino and Meesha, portraying their growth, resilience, and the unexpected bond that forms between them. One of the features which impressed me the most was the use of atmospheric and multisensory language to bring the historical period to life; for example, in the vivid descriptions of the landscape and culture that enriched the narrative, transporting readers to a time of fierce struggle and essential human connection. The novel beautifully explores themes of redemption, sisterhood, and the complexities of personal battles. Overall, The Falcon, the Wolf, and the Hummingbird is a must-read for those who enjoy strong female protagonists and richly layered narratives with plenty of atmosphere and drama.
