Background
My diverse career has been complemented with my avocation of teaching, counseling, and pastoring in various communities of faith for over thirty years. Starting as Catholic, my faith moved to Baptist then Pentecostal faith communities, concluding with starting and pastoring my own IPHC church from 1999 until 2006. I have served in many capacities in Baptist, Pentecostal, and independent churches during which I developed a view of faith that I believe is unique and relevant for our times. www.faithforthetimes.net has been my forum for writing about current issues and their relevance to our faith.

Faith is described in the book of Hebrews as "the substance of things hoped for" and "the evidence of things not seen." In The Evidence of Things Unseen: Faith Revealed in a Family, in a Community and a Nation, Jerry Aveta describes it as the intersection of the natural with the supernatural. He discusses how faith is revealed in the family, community, and nation. Jerry provides answers to issues that trouble our faith and our community as a whole by drawing on his experience in his marriage, ministry, and career. There is a reader's guide section that facilitates group conversations. A synopsis of each chapter is provided in this part, along with discussion initiating questions. A searchable index allows readers to retrieve words from the book quickly.

Despite being a faith-based book, The Evidence of Things Unseen is one of the most practical books I have ever read. I adored the author's realism and approach to real-life challenges. He offers an objective and non-judgmental point of view. People may learn how to handle problems through this. His abortion argument was one of the book's most intriguing and eye-opening sections. The author's anecdotes were another thing that I loved. Almost every lesson Jerry Aveta presented had a corresponding anecdote, which was often instructive. I enjoyed his viewpoints regarding matters of religion, ministry, and politics. He will help so many people by being candid about the difficulties of his marriage and ministry and by giving them strategies for overcoming those barriers. I found this book to be such a blessing, and I do not doubt that you will too.

Jerry Aveta did not become a man of the cloth overnight. A series of events that happened to him over the years made him realize his calling was inspired. What stood out for him was the influence of the faith of some key members of his family. This is not to say he did not endure some false starts in this journey such as his first attempt at aligning with the faith in the early days of his youth as well as the tragedy of losing his child's mother. Despite these setbacks, he stuck to his belief in himself and the Lord's direction in his life. The Evidence Of Things Unseen is the chronicle of his journey in the faith.

The Evidence Of Things Unseen is an intriguing account of personal events presented from the viewpoint of an extremely analytical thinker. Jerry Aveta uses various examples from his past but presents them in a somewhat chronological fashion, starting from some selected experiences in his childhood and graduating to his adult years in a manner that makes following his line of thought comfortable for a reader. What stands out for me is the scientific approach to his postulations on the effects of faith on the individual. He presents some thought-provoking theories that are worth more than just a cursory glance. I may not completely agree with his assertions on the relationship between sacrifice and faith but I must admit it is insightful. The Evidence Of Things Unseen is a one-of-a-kind book I would encourage everyone to read. The knowledge this book holds is priceless.

The Evidence of Things Unseen by Jerry Aveta is a combination of a personal journal, a history/civics book, and an examination of religious faith’s interaction with the government of the United States. The author writes frankly about his life experiences, both good and bad, and also describes his own spiritual journey, which ranges from Catholicism to both Pentecostal and non-Pentecostal Protestant churches. As one example of how his views have changed, Aveta describes working through a change in his ideas on the extremely difficult and controversial matter of abortion. The book concludes with ideas on how churches can change their current practices, which will result in the greater good for all. There are numerous photos of the author and his family.

The Evidence of Things Unseen by Jerry Aveta is an honest and thought-provoking book. Everyone, regardless of their personal faith, the lack thereof, or if they’re seeking what belief system is right for them, can profit from and be encouraged by this book. For me, the author’s honesty about the good and bad in his own life helped me more realistically assess and accept my own experiences. He freely admits to making some mistakes in his religious life, such as holding a prayer meeting using government resources and time. Because my journey of faith in some ways parallels the author’s, this book was particularly meaningful to me. But one doesn’t need to be in the same position to enjoy, learn from, and be inspired by this book. I recommend it to anyone.
